PITTSBORO, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The OpenNMS Group, Inc., the maintainers of the award winning OpenNMS open source network management application platform, are releasing a new product line called OpenNMS Meridian.

Earlier in the year, the community-driven OpenNMS Project renamed the mainline software release to OpenNMS Horizon. This signaled a change to a much more rapid release cycle for OpenNMS to align with the open source mantra of “release early, release often.”

However, the OpenNMS Group identified a need within its customer base for a version of OpenNMS with a longer, very stable release cycle, even if it sacrificed access to the latest features. OpenNMS Meridian was created to address that need. In addition, the Meridian subscription will include access to custom configurations such as improved reports and correlations that the user would have to build for themselves in Horizon.

“It has sometimes been hard to justify the purchase of our core product, OpenNMS Support,” says Tarus Balog, the OpenNMS Group CEO, “if we do our job right, then support becomes less of a requirement and more of an insurance policy. We wanted to be able to provide value on a continuous basis and to better productize our service offerings. Anyone familiar with the Red Hat model will recognize its influence in our decision: Meridian is analogous to Red Hat Enterprise Linux whereas Horizon is like Fedora.”

The OpenNMS Meridian subscription is offered for a yearly, flat fee per management server. It includes access to the OpenNMS Connect website where the Meridian community can ask questions as well as interact with each other to maximize their Meridian investment. More formal Meridian support is offered through the OpenNMS Prime Support product, and there are also support options available for OpenNMS Horizon.

Both Horizon and Meridian are published under the open source Affero General Public License (AGPLv3). Meridian can also be used under a proprietary license for those organizations who have concerns about the APGL.

Meridian is set to launch on March 17, 2015, while Horizon is available now.
